First I must know whether the unit is actually going into defrost and what measure you have taken to determine this. There are other reasons why your refrigerator would not run for 2 to 3 days. You will need to run down the conditions in steps. Are there lights on when refrigerator is not running? When it is running does the fresh food control affect compressor operation? Have you noticed any humming followed by click? Is the compressor hot- too hot to touch? Are your condenser coils blocked?danhaan27@msn.com wrote:

The freezer is staying in defrost mode for a couple of days and then goes back to normal for 3 days

Could you provide a model number so we may see what we are dealing with?

Just from the info you have given, it could be your water level switch, something blocking the pressure hose, or a bad timer.
Topic "Whirlpool side by side ice machine/cold water" a message from jgarcia@apdepot.com

ok, first thing you want to do is fill the icemaker with water and let in run its course, meaning let it freeze and dump the ice. IF the icemaker dumps the ice then the icemaker is ok, now that it has dump the ice it needs to send a signal down to the valve to send water. If this does not happen one of 2 things are happeninng, the icemaker sensor is not sensing that the ice has been release or the valve is not working. Testing the valve, you can switch the leads on the valve that provides power to the valve that sends water to the dispenser of water and put it on the valve for the ice maker, using the switch that you push to release the water you are actually sending 110 volts to power it up it should release water. If it does than the icemaker needs to be repalced, but if it does not the valve is the problem. there are some cases where both needs to be replace but thats about all that i can say on this subject hopefully this has given some kind of insight to what might be happening. I am more than happy to answer anymore questions. Thanks julio
